Thursday Night Pool Training
Our Thursday night swim session is structured according to the training requirement for that particular time of the year. Basically we move from endurance/strength sessions in winter with a large emphasis on technique to speed sessions for the spring/summer.
As a rule of thumb, you should ideally be able to swim 400m front crawl before attending our swim sessions. However, if you are concerned that you can’t do this, please speak to the coach taking the swim session first.
On Thursday nights we hire 5 (4 for second swim) lanes at Fulham Pools for two one-hour sessions, 8.00-9.00pm (‘first swim’) and 9.00-10.00pm (‘second swim’). Within each session, lanes 1 to 4/5 are divided by ability groups with Lane 1 being the easier and Lane 5 the Hardest (mostly dolphins!). Both swim sessions have a cap on numbers(8 per lane), so you must ‘sign in’ for the swim session you wish to attend at the Club’s registration desk from 7.30pm.
Priority is given to members with pre-paid swimming and is on a first come first served basis. Any remaining spaces are available to members who haven’t pre-paid their swimming, again on a first come first served basis and on payment of £5.
During the winter season the swim sessions are very popular so it is imperative that you arrive as close to 7.30pm as possible to avoid disappointment. It is always worth bringing some running kit as well so you can do the run or spin session if the swim fills up before you sign in. The second swim is often less crowded. Club Coaches are usually poolside to facilitate swim sets in each lane.
Sunday Night Pool Training
Our Sunday night pool session is usually coached and open to pre-paid swimming members only. The sessions take place at Fulham Pools from 6.00-7.00pm where we hire 4 lanes. A designated coach will bring the swim sets to the pool, and the lanes are divided by ability groups.
One-to-One Swim Coaching
While we don’t offer one-to-one swim coaching within the Club sessions, we are able to recommend swim coaching clinics and coaches. Please contact the head coach for further information (see Contacts page).
Open Water Swimming
Open water swims are regularly held at two venues through the summer months: Heron Lake (Wraysbury) and Liquid Leisure (Datchet). These both provide a great opportunity to swim in more race-like conditions – ie. Outdoors, in a wetsuit, etc. These have proved to be of huge benefit to our members. Many people (especially beginners) complain of anxiety in open water and in all cases this was virtually eradicated by swimming at these venues. It is also a great opportunity to practice sighting and transition skills.
Heron Lake is owned by the British Disabled Water Ski Association, and triathlete swimming at Heron Lake is organised through Heron Lake Swimmers/SBR Windsor. The lake is open from the first weekend in May until early September, and is available to triathletes on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday mornings from 6am-8.45am. Swim fees are GBP 5 per swim or GBP 35 for 10 swims purchased on the gate. The following facilities are available for use: changing rooms, showers, toilets, café.
Liquid Leisure is operated by Open Water Swim UK. The lake is open from the first weekend in May until early September, and is available to triathletes on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6am-8.45am. Swim fees are GBP 5 per swim or GBP 40 for 10 swims purchased on the gate. The following facilities are available for use: changing rooms, showers, toilets, café, jacuzzi.
All lake swimmers must abide by the Club’s Code of Conduct on open water swimming. If you have never swum in open water before you must notify another swimmer or person who can raise the alarm if you get into trouble, and should swim within sight of the jetty/entrance to the water. We recommend that novice triathletes attend a Club session first where other members will be able to show you the ropes. All Club members should swim in pairs based upon speed and ability, and must wear a wetsuit and brightly coloured swim cap. Club members tend to swim at both lakes on Sundays from 7am (please arrive by 6.45am), and lake preference is often posted on the forum.
The Princes Club also offers triathlete swimming on Saturday mornings (6am-8.45am) and Monday evenings (5pm-8pm) through the summer months.
Tooting Bec Lido provides another open water swim location closer to London. Members who live close to the Lido tend to swim early morning from 6.30am-7.30am before work. The pool is 90m long by 30m wide.
