Race Report W/E 28 April

Triathlon season is finally here, despite the reports of yet more running. As proof we actually have triathlon race results to report!

Oh, and there were some full and half marathon things going on too. Possibly a surprise TT in the mix as well.

Saturday – ELCTS Pembrokeshire Half Marathon

Our lone Ful-on-Tri runner in the latest ELCTS offroad fest was Nicky Huskens. Braving the winds and undulating coastline of the Welsh seaside, she finished in a very respectable 1hr 54min. Awesome running!

Rock’n’Roll Half Marathon – Madrid

Also on Saturday, Enrique Pinel raced the Rock’n’Roll half in Madrid, smashing out a 1hr 29min finish time!

Sunday – Ironman 70.3 Marbella

Three of the club took on this middle distance race in Spain. As a reminder, middle distance is a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and a half marathon run to finish.

Officially racing for the club, Karl Boehm came in first in 4h 48min, shortly followed by Nick van Praag in 5h 14 min. Fast racing by both!

But, our first Ful-on-Tri member (racing for Triathlon Galdakao) was Julen Diez, who continued his blisteringly fast form by finishing in a time of 4hr 18min, clinching 1st in his category, and 15th overall!

Uckfield Triathlon

Down in leafy Mid Sussex, Sunday also saw the Uckfield Sprint triathlon. A 600m pool swim, followed by a 22km bike, and then a 5km run to finish things off.

Will Manns was out representing the club in this race, and finished 4th overall (6 seconds shy of 3rd!), and 1st in his category in a time of just under 1hr 10min. Great racing!!

Jurassic Trail Half Marathon

The course website describes this as “not only a visually spectacular run along the Jurassic coast but also a challenge that some would class as undulating”.

Emma O’Neile took on this challenge, and, came 20th overall, in a time of 2hr 7min, and 3rd overall female!!

Charlotteville (not the USA) cycling club 50mile TT – Farnham

Several of the club were on their bikes racing a 50 mile TT near Farnham on Sunday morning: Richard Harper; Martin Bruwer; Jonathan Saunders; Andrea Sala; and, Heather Mayer.

A slightly larger field than the typical TTs the club normally races – 153 cyclists (21 women, 73 men, and 59 vets) – this looked like a nice day out near the Hampshire / Surrey border.

All our club finished within 15 min of each other, with Heather (racing for CC London) coming in 1st (and 5th female) in a speedy time just shy of 2hr 3min.

London Marathon

And finally, the non triathlon event that some / many have been waiting for. We’ve had a number of people training in earnest for this amazing running race: Charlotte Gibb; Helen Fagan; Luke Hardman; James Ogilvy; Pierre-Eliott Roussel; James Ellis; Sally Benton; Ursula Faux; Lloyd Seaman; Katie Good; Tamsin Ede; Luke Hardman; and, Janice Hardman.

With the winds dying down today, and temperatures more amenable than last year, this was a great day for some strong performances, and our field didn’t disappoint. We had the Hardman family running and finishing together in a solid 4hr 30ish, Charlotte storming back to form post pregnancy, and I suspect a number of first marathons.

Special mentions to: Sally for nailing a PB of sub 3hr 30min; Ursula for also going sub 3hr 30min, (a pb by 9 min!); Lloyd Seaman, who ran 3hr 8min (dressed as a bottle?); James Ogilvy who finished well under 4hr despite starting his training programme close to the race; and, Katie who also completed the race under 4hr.

Of course, fastest were the seasoned runners Tamsin and James Ellis. Tamsin (running for Clapham Chasers) completed the course in just under 3hr 19min (presumably a good for age time!), whilst James (running for Thames Valley Harriers) stormed to a 37th overall position (31st in category) with a time of just over 2hr 26min!!

Great performances by all, and look forward to you all putting those endurance qualities to the test for triathlons over the remainder of the season, scoring points and successes for Ful-on-Tri!
