Membership FAQ

Can I join the club at any time?

Yes, we welcome new members at any time throughout the year. Club memberships renew on 1 October each year. Small discounts are introduced for those joining once at least six months through the membership year, but this is determined only if or when our financial position allows. If you have any specific questions please email membership@fulontri.com.

Are there additional fees for attending training sessions?

No. Unlike many other triathlon clubs, once you have paid your membership, you don’t have to pay any more for your training sessions.

How fit or fast do I need to be to join FoT?

We welcome all new members, regardless of background and ability. Whether you are completely new to triathlon or an experienced athlete, our training caters to all levels.

Does it matter if I’ve never done a triathlon before?

No, not at all. If you’re a complete beginner, you’ll receive all the help and training you need to get racing. Our experienced coaching team are always on hand to offer tips and advice while our friendly club members are a wealth of knowledge that you’ll be able to tap into.

What if I’m not a strong swimmer?

Many people find swimming the most challenging part of triathlon, but don’t let this put you off joining FoT. We cater to all levels, with our training schedule designed to help improve your technique, strength and fitness. In our coached swim sessions, we split members into different lanes based on their speed and if you attend these consistently you can expect to make significant progress. We can also recommend some excellent short swim courses to complete before joining us.

What kit do I need?

When it comes to triathlon kit, there are many options to suit all levels of experience and budgets. For a complete beginner, we don’t recommend buying lots of expensive kit until you know what your requirements are. We can provide plenty of advice and we have a variety of club kit available to buy, too.

For our training sessions, here is the basic kit you will need:

  • Swim: Normal swimwear (costume or trunks), goggles and a cap. A pull buoy is required in some sessions, but not essential. You can leave your bag poolside or bring 20p for the locker.
  • Cycling: Road bike, helmet, puncture repair kit, a water bottle and nutrition
  • Running: Running shoes and suitable clothing for the weather

How do I volunteer at the club?

We have a great club because our coaching team, committee and club members all contribute by volunteering. There are many ways you can help out, from ride leading to helping organise socials and training holidays to joining our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee.

Volunteers will receive VIP points throughout the year which can be used to discount the following year’s membership. Announcements in the newsletter and posted in the Facebook group will highlight when help is needed. You can also speak to a committee member about other ways you can contribute to the club.
